Paper-cutting is an ancient art of storytelling through hollowed spaces. Before paper existed, artisans carved on gold foil, bark, and leather. Like dandelion seeds, this craft drifted across China, taking root in diverse soils and blossoming into countless styles.
Southern paper-cutting is delicate, like misty Jiangnan rain, capturing birds and flowers with intricate layers. Northern styles are bold and earthy, reflecting rustic life—marriages, harvests, and festivals. Each piece, be it a "福" (fortune) character or a zodiac animal, carries people's simplest wishes for a good life.
The wisdom of paper-cutting lies in "the art of leaving blank." Through emptiness, meaning emerges. It teaches us: abundance often comes not from possession, but from knowing what to let go. The playful mouse stealing oil—a classic motif—captures life’s most vivid moments.
This folk treasure reminds us: the humblest materials can create the most profound beauty. In every cut, there is a universe. In every empty space, a story waits.
