The most precious thing in life is not what we have lost or have yet to gain, but what we hold right now. Often, we refuse to compromise, discontent with the present, believing that letting go will lead to something better. Yet the next may be worse. Excessive desires only steal the joy of the moment. A Zen poem says: “Sitting, I watch clouds drift; walking, I see rivers flow.” Wake to tea, eat when hungry—such simple pleasures are the true blessings. Peace lies not in having more, but in appreciating what is. A proud man complained to a Zen master about the world’s flaws. The master replied: “Water too clear has no fish; even jade hides imperfections.” True greatness comes from tolerance and grace. Once, a deer fell ill. Many friends visited, eating all the grass nearby. When the deer recovered, it starved. Too many fair-weather friends do more harm than good. Learn to yield. Cherish what you have. Embrace imperfection. That is wisdom.
