In spring, blossoms; in autumn, the moon. In summer, cool breezes; in winter, snow. When the heart is free from burdens, every season is a good season. This is the way of the ordinary mind. A monk climbing a mountain grabbed a thorny vine and cut his hand. His master said, "Thorns cling to others, yet you clung to them. You brought this upon yourself." Do not rely on those who cannot be relied upon. Whether rich or poor, idle or busy—everyone suffers. The less we endure, the more we suffer. Why not see hardship as a forge for the soul? A monk asked, "A wild goose flies across the sky, its shadow sinks in the cold water. Neither leaves a trace. Is this Zen?" The master replied, "Reed catkins like snow on both banks, a river of autumn." The answer lies in the scene itself. Plant virtue in the heart, and evil finds no ground. Sow kindness, and weeds of malice cannot grow. In all dealings, uplift others and cultivate tolerance. True wisdom is letting go, and living fully in the present.
