Life flows like a gentle stream, carrying timeless truths in its quiet currents.
Focus too narrowly, and you lose sight of what matters. A long illness tests even the most devoted child; prosperity often attracts unwelcome company. Wealth brings distant relatives; poverty silences the neighborhood. Many cross your path, but few truly know your heart.
There are meals you should decline: the feast already served, the wine already poured. Some people are best left in the past: former spouses and friends who turned away. Never borrow from the poor, nor give to the rich. Never bow to those who disregard you, whether friend or kin.
Do good without counting the cost. Your children have their own path—don't live theirs for them. Know contentment and you'll never be shamed; know limits and you'll never be disgraced. Better to be upright with little than crooked with much.
Learn from others to refine yourself. Master a thousand songs before judging music; examine a thousand swords before discerning quality. Deep knowledge brings calm; true wisdom brings peace. Swallow one harsh word, cool one burst of anger, yield one step forward.
Life polishes the soul. Do no evil, however small; neglect no good, however slight. May your children be virtuous—that is treasure enough.
