Confucius once went out as dark clouds gathered. He had no umbrella, and someone suggested, “Zixia has one. Why not borrow it?”
Confucius shook his head. “No. Zixia is frugal. If he refuses, others will think he disrespects his teacher. If he lends it, he will feel uneasy. Why put him in such a dilemma?”
This simple story carries a profound truth: true wisdom in relationships lies not in testing others, but in understanding their nature. Know their strengths, but also respect their limits. Do not use their weaknesses as a measure of loyalty or generosity.
When we accept people as they are—with their virtues and flaws—friendship becomes a shelter, not a test.
