A single ivory chopstick can reveal a kingdom's fate.
When King Zhou of Shang ordered an ivory chopstick, his wise minister Jizi foresaw disaster. An ivory chopstick would not match earthenware—only jade cups and rhinoceros horns would suffice. Fine vessels demand delicacies, which lead to luxurious clothes and grand palaces. Desire, once unleashed, knows no bounds.
True to his fears, the king built the Deer Terrace, filled it with treasures, and created a pool of wine with a forest of meat. His extravagance knew no limits. Ultimately, his people turned against him, and he perished in the flames of his own palace.
A small beginning held the seed of destruction. Wisdom lies in recognizing the trajectory of desire before it consumes everything. Moderation is not restraint—it is foresight.
