The Courage to Speak Truth
In ancient China, few dared to speak honestly before emperors. Kou Zhun was one such man. Song Taizong once said, “Having Kou Zhun is like Tang Taizong having Wei Zheng.”
At nineteen, Kou passed the highest imperial exam. When advised to lie about his age to please the emperor, he refused: “How can I deceive my sovereign at the very start of my career?”
Later, during a heated court session, the emperor tried to leave in anger. Kou grabbed the emperor’s robe and refused to let go until he was heard. The emperor stayed, listened, and later praised him.
But honesty often invites trouble. After a misunderstanding involving a madman shouting “Long live,” Kou was exiled. Though recalled, he was later slandered and died in exile. Only years later was his name cleared.
Kou Zhun’s life teaches us: speak truth with courage, live with integrity. Even if the world turns against you, your conscience will remain at peace.
