Many know Yu Xuanji as a Daoist nun or a courtesan, but few remember she was one of the four great female poets of the Tang Dynasty. Born Yu Youwei, she was brilliant and beautiful. She shared poetry with Wen Tingyun, but a 32-year age gap kept them apart. Later, she became a concubine to Li Yi, only to be cast out by his wife and sent to a Daoist temple. She wrote, “Easy to find priceless treasure, hard to find a faithful heart.” These words, born from heartbreak, echo through time. In despair, she lived freely among scholars and romantics—until a fit of jealousy led to a maid’s death, and her own execution. A gifted woman, undone by love. Her story reminds us: the rarest thing in life is not wealth, but sincerity. If you cannot find it, walk alone. That clarity may be her greatest legacy.
