When Emperor Yingzong of Song ascended the throne, Empress Dowager Cishou secretly wrote to Chancellor Han Qi, complaining that the Emperor and his birth mother showed her disrespect, and hinted at seeking revenge through eunuchs. Han Qi simply replied, "I accept your command."
The next day, Han Qi delayed the court session and privately met the Emperor. "There is a letter you must see," he said, "but it must remain confidential." He continued, "Your Majesty owes your throne to the Empress Dowager. Though she is not your birth mother, treat her with respect, and all will be well."
When asked for guidance, Han Qi advised, "I dare not bear the burden of this letter. Burn it secretly, lest troublemakers exploit it." The Emperor agreed and did so. Thereafter, the two empresses reconciled, and no one ever knew of the conflict.
Wise ministers of old spoke directly to their rulers. When trust prevails, even the most delicate palace matters can be resolved in time.
