Cao Cao, a cunning warlord, once claimed he killed in his sleep and warned his guards to stay away. One night, a loyal attendant covered him with a blanket, only to be slain on the spot. Feigning ignorance, Cao wept and gave him a lavish burial. All believed the lie—except Yang Xiu, who sighed, “The lord is not dreaming; it is you who are asleep.” Hearing this, Cao despised him and later had him executed.
The I Ching says: “The wise speak little; the restless speak much.” Those of virtue know their limits and speak only when necessary. The impulsive, eager to prove themselves, talk endlessly. Words can heal or harm—speak with care.
Life teaches us that silence is often wisdom. A deep river flows quietly; shallow streams babble. Guard your tongue, nurture your heart, and let your actions speak louder than your words.
