Thus, a wise person dwells in the world yet keeps the heart detached. A stone asked the Buddha: Should I marry the one I love or the one who loves me? The Buddha replied: Who makes you feel fulfilled and walk with your head high—the one you love, or the one who loves you? A master drew a black dot on a whiteboard and asked his disciples: What is this? They answered in unison: A black dot. The master smiled: Only a dot? Did none see the vast white space? A wooden stake tied to a boat said: You’ve lost your freedom. The boat replied: So have you. The master said: Those who seek to bind others are themselves bound. The Buddha asked a monk: How long is life? The monk replied: A few days. Another said: The time of a meal. A third answered: Between breaths. The Buddha praised: Truly, that is life. Life is fleeting—cherish each breath. Rise above turmoil, free yourself from attachment, and live with presence and purpose.
