Patience is the foundation of great achievement. Zeng Guofan once said, "For those in office, patience is the foremost principle." In truth, whether in governance, relationships, or self-cultivation, patience is indispensable.
When the Huai Army was founded, Li Hongzhang recommended three men to Zeng Guofan. Instead of meeting them at once, Zeng observed them in secret. After half an hour, two grew restless—one fidgeting, the other anxious. Only one stood calmly, hands behind his back, gazing at the drifting clouds. Zeng declared, "This man knows patience. He will achieve greatness." That man was Liu Mingchuan, later a famed general.
Patience brings calm in crisis. When trouble strikes, impatience only fuels chaos. The wise stay composed, think clearly, and act deliberately.
Patience fosters tolerance. People differ in nature. Embrace those who share your values; ignore those who don't. To be tolerant is to be embraced.
Patience grants grace in adversity. Life is filled with disappointments. Without patience, how can we face storms with a smile? Conflicts with friends, colleagues, or neighbors—all can be met with ease, like a gentle breeze that leaves no trace.
Zeng himself was not gifted. As a child, a thief memorized a passage before he could. Yet through relentless effort, he became a great statesman. The power to endure is the power to overcome.
Patience—two simple words, yet profound. May we all cultivate a patient heart and walk through life with grace.
