Every matter has its root and branches, every event its beginning and end. Knowing what comes first and what follows brings us closer to the Way.
Life flows like seasons—spring planting, autumn harvest. When the mind is still, peace follows; from peace comes clarity; from clarity, wisdom. A calm heart reflects all things clearly.
Self-cultivation is the foundation. To bring light to the world, begin with your nation; to govern your nation, first harmonize your family; to harmonize your family, cultivate yourself. Cultivation begins with a sincere heart, and sincerity grows from exploring the nature of things.
The noble person focuses on what is essential. Once the root is firm, the Way unfolds. Loyalty and trustworthiness win hearts; arrogance and extravagance lose them. Wealth adorns a house, but virtue adorns the soul. A broad heart brings ease to the body.
Ask questions, listen to simple words, conceal faults and praise goodness. Hold both ends and use the middle way. Learn widely, inquire thoroughly, think carefully, discern clearly, and practice earnestly.
Renew yourself daily—if you can renew today, renew tomorrow, and every day thereafter. Time flows like a river, never ceasing. Learning without thinking leads to confusion; thinking without learning leads to danger.
When Heaven entrusts a great mission, it first tests the heart, strains the body, and challenges every step. One cannot be corrupted by wealth, swayed by poverty, or subdued by force—this is true greatness.
Wealth has its principle: many producers, few consumers, swift creation, gentle use. Then abundance endures.
Blame neither Heaven nor others. The noble person waits in peace; the petty person takes reckless risks.
Know when to stop, and you will find stillness. From stillness comes peace, from peace comes reflection, from reflection comes attainment. This is the path of life.
