During the Spring and Autumn period, the powerful state of Jin plotted to attack Qi. To test Qi’s strength, they sent Minister Fan Zhao as an envoy. Duke Jing of Qi hosted a grand banquet. Feigning drunkenness, Fan Zhao asked to drink from the Duke’s cup—a deliberate breach of etiquette meant to probe Qi’s resolve. But Yan Ying, Qi’s wise minister, immediately ordered the cup replaced, seeing through the ruse. Upon returning, Fan Zhao advised the Jin ruler: “Qi has a sage like Yan Ying. Attacking now would be futile.” Jin abandoned its campaign. This story reveals a timeless truth: true power lies not in force, but in wisdom and integrity. Yan Ying defused a war over a cup of wine—what Confucius called “turning the tide from within the banquet hall.” In life, too, the greatest victories are often won not with weapons, but with presence of mind and quiet resolve. May we learn to meet challenges with grace, and transform conflict into peace—just as Yan Ying did, centuries ago.
