“Phoenix feathers and unicorn horns” is a Chinese idiom for something exceedingly rare.
In the Southern Dynasties, Xie Chaozong, grandson of the famed poet Xie Lingyun, was praised by Emperor Xiaowu as having “phoenix feathers.” General Liu Daolong, hearing this, believed there was a real treasure and searched Xie’s home—only to find nothing.
The lesson is simple: we often chase outward signs of rarity, missing the true value within. Rarity is not about possessing something scarce, but about becoming someone exceptional—through character, wisdom, and inner peace.
Do not seek rare things. Seek to be a rare soul. That is the greatest treasure of all.
