Words that exceed reality often lead to regret. During the Three Kingdoms period, Ma Su was known for his eloquent speeches on military strategy. Zhuge Liang valued him, but Liu Bei saw through his grandiosity. On his deathbed, Liu Bei warned: “His words surpass his ability. Do not trust him with great responsibility.” Sadly, Zhuge Liang forgot this advice. Ma Su was tasked with defending the strategic outpost of Jieting, and his failure led to the collapse of the Northern Expedition. Only then did Zhuge Liang realize Liu Bei’s wisdom.
Those who overstate their abilities may speak impressively but lack the substance to deliver. Words are like wind; actions are like mountains. True wisdom lies not in how brilliantly we speak, but in how faithfully we act. Let this be a reminder: examine whether your words match your deeds. Only when speech and action are aligned can we walk steadily, honor our commitments, and live with integrity.
