Zhang Liang, also known as Zhang Zifang, was once a young man wandering near a bridge. There, an old man in brown robes deliberately dropped his shoe and asked Zhang to pick it up. Though annoyed, Zhang complied. The old man then demanded, “Put it on for me.” Swallowing his displeasure, Zhang did so with respect. The old man left without a word, only to return and say, “You are worth teaching. Meet me here in five days.”
Five days later, Zhang arrived early, but the old man was already there, scolding him for being late. This happened twice. Determined, Zhang came before midnight on the third try. The old man, pleased, gifted him a book on military strategy, saying, “Master this, and you may become a teacher of kings.”
Zhang studied diligently and later became a key advisor to Liu Bang, founder of the Han Dynasty.
This story reminds us that true wisdom often arrives through trials disguised as annoyances. Patience, humility, and persistence can transform ordinary moments into life-changing opportunities. When we respond to challenges with grace, we open doors we never knew existed.
