During the Warring States period, the state of Wei besieged Handan, the capital of Zhao. Zhao turned to Qi for help. Generals Tian Ji and Sun Bin led the Qi army, but instead of marching directly to Zhao, they attacked the undefended capital of Wei. The Wei army rushed back to defend, exhausted from the long march. The Qi army, fresh and prepared, ambushed and defeated them, lifting the siege of Zhao.
This strategy, known as “Besiege Wei to Rescue Zhao,” teaches a timeless lesson: when faced with a direct confrontation, seek an indirect path. In life, not every problem must be met head-on. Sometimes, the best solution lies in shifting your focus, finding leverage where others least expect it. Like water flowing around a stone, true strength lies in flexibility and wisdom. Master the art of redirection, and you’ll find peace even in chaos.
