The wise speak little, for they know the weight of words. Cao Cao once claimed he killed in his sleep, warning his attendants to stay away. A servant, seeing his blanket fall, covered him—only to be slain instantly. Feigning surprise, Cao Cao mourned him publicly. But Yang Xiu saw through the ruse, murmuring, "The丞相 is not dreaming; it is you who are asleep." These words reached Cao Cao, planting seeds of resentment. Later, Yang Xiu was executed on a pretext.
The Book of Changes says: "The virtuous speak little; the restless speak much." Those of deep virtue know their inadequacy and speak only when necessary. The impatient, eager to prove themselves, chatter endlessly. Misfortune often springs from the tongue. Speak when needed; remain silent when not.
Words are like a blade—they can warm hearts or wound souls. Better to cultivate stillness than to invite calamity with careless speech. Know when to stop, and you shall find peace.
