A man once claimed to have seen the ancient general Bai Qi, who foretold an invasion. When the attack indeed came, the emperor wanted to build a temple for Bai Qi.
But his advisor said: "A country thrives when its ruler listens to wise counsel. Our soldiers fought bravely—if you reward a ghost instead, they will lose heart. Grand rituals may also stir superstition and harm the people."
The emperor listened and chose a simpler tribute.
True wisdom lies not in seeking divine signs, but in valuing the living. Honor those who act, not legends of the past. Strength comes from clear judgment and respect for reality.
