During the late Sui Dynasty, a recluse named Mr. Wei lived in seclusion. He met Li Mi, a fugitive general disguised as a teacher. Observing Li’s anxious demeanor, Wei said half-jokingly, “The court is hunting rebels. Could you be one of them?” Startled, Li begged for guidance.
Wei replied, “You lack the aura of a true leader or the strategy of a general. You are merely a hero of troubled times. If you serve the rising power in the Fen and Jin region, your future may be bright.” Li scoffed, “Pedantic nonsense!” and left in anger. He later raised an army, was defeated, surrendered to the Tang, rebelled again, and was ultimately destroyed.
The greatest challenge is knowing oneself. Li Mi overestimated his abilities, while Wei saw clearly but could not change another’s fate. True wisdom lies not in judging others, but in understanding your own limits—knowing when to advance and when to retreat. Without self-awareness, even the best opportunities fade like a flash in the pan. May we all find the clarity to hear our inner voice amidst the noise of the world.
