When Sweet Wine Ceases
Prince Yuan of Chu, brother of Emperor Gaozu, always respected his advisors, including Musheng, who didn’t drink alcohol. At every banquet, the Prince prepared sweet wine for him. When his son Wu succeeded, he continued the gesture at first, but gradually forgot.
Musheng saw the change and said, “The sweet wine is gone, and so is his regard. If I stay, trouble will follow.” He feigned illness and withdrew. Shen Gong and Bai Sheng urged him to stay, saying, “How can you mind such a small slight after all your years of honor?”
Musheng replied, “The Book of Changes says: ‘To perceive the subtle is to be wise.’ A wise man acts at the first sign. The old Prince honored us for virtue. The new one forgets the virtue, not just the wine. Can I stay with one who has lost his way?” He left. Shen and Bai stayed.
Years later, Prince Wu grew arrogant and rebellious. When they tried to advise him, he ignored them. In despair, they too withdrew.
Life’s wisdom lies in reading the signs. A small act reveals a big truth. When respect fades, it’s time to go. Stay not for old times’ sake, but move with grace before the storm arrives.
