## A Father Knows His Son
Fan Li, known as Lord Zhu, had a youngest son raised in luxury, unaware of money's worth. When his second son was imprisoned in Chu for murder, Fan prepared a thousand gold pieces to send his youngest for rescue.
His eldest son insisted on going, threatening suicide if refused. Fan reluctantly agreed, instructing him to deliver the gold to his old friend Zhuang Sheng and obey him without question.
The eldest delivered the gold but disobeyed Zhuang's order to leave immediately. Zhuang, an honest man respected by the king, planned to return the gold after saving the younger brother. He convinced the king to grant amnesty based on astrological signs.
Hearing this, the eldest thought: "Since amnesty is coming, why waste the gold?" He retrieved it from Zhuang.
Feeling humiliated, Zhuang told the king: "People say the amnesty is not for the people, but because the rich merchant's son bribed your officials." The furious king executed the prisoner first, then declared amnesty.
The eldest returned with his brother's death. Fan Li said: "You grew up in hardship, valuing money above all. Your youngest brother, born to wealth, could part with gold easily. I sent him because he could spend freely. You killed your brother with your stinginess. A father knows his son—I foresaw this."
