Zeng Guofan once said, “The more a gentleman yields, the more a petty man advances.”
You may think that by always giving in and being considerate, others will treat you kindly in return. But often, the opposite is true. Most people won’t remember your sacrifices—they’ll take them for granted, and eventually take advantage of your kindness.
If everyone calls you “nice,” you may have lost your boundaries. True kindness is not endless concession. It is knowing when to yield and when to stand firm.
A gentleman yields not out of weakness, but out of wisdom. A petty man pushes not out of strength, but out of greed.
Be kind, but not naïve. Be generous, but not without limits.
Yield to those who deserve it. Stop when you must.
Only then can you stay true to yourself and walk far with grace.
