Do nothing that makes you frown, and no one will gnash their teeth at you.
What are “frowning deeds”? Anything that goes against conscience and nature—taking joy in others’ misfortunes, harboring envy or resentment, wishing others worse off, or feeling uneasy at their success. These are the things that make you frown.
If you avoid such deeds, there will be no one who gnashes their teeth at you. This wisdom works both ways:
First, with a compassionate heart, even those who oppose you become teachers. You hold no grudges, so there is no enemy.
Second, if you do not resent others, why would they resent you?
Thus, you have neither outward foes nor inner bitterness. Live with a clear conscience, and find peace in every moment.
