The heart is the root; actions are the fruit. As an ancient saying goes, “A good heart makes a good person; an evil heart makes a harmful one.” Just like a fruit whose stem has rotted will surely fall, so too does a corrupted heart lead to a flawed life.
Wang Yangming, the great Ming philosopher, taught that the heart is the foundation of all. To nurture it is to cultivate sincerity and conscience. When our thoughts are upright, we walk the path of goodness; when they stray, we drift toward harm.
A restless heart cannot achieve great things; a heart overtaken by darkness will bear bitter fruit. Yet goodness is not something we must seek outside—it lies within each of us, waiting to be awakened.
Let us tend to this inner stem with care, so the fruit of our lives may ripen fully and fall with grace. In the end, it is kindness that carries us farthest.
