The Untethered Boat
Zhuangzi once said: “The skillful toil, the wise worry. Those who are free from both desire nothing. They drift through life like an untethered boat, wandering without aim, at peace with the world.”
This image of the untethered boat embodies a life of true freedom—floating with the current, unbound by expectations or outcomes. In today’s world, we are driven by competition and desire. We chase results, and when they elude us, anxiety and regret take hold.
But wisdom lies in letting go. Excessive desire is the root of suffering. Life is short; it cannot bear the weight of endless worry. When we release our grip on outcomes and embrace the present, we find a spaciousness within.
A heart free of selfish wants opens up a world without limits. Like the untethered boat, we move with grace, not by force, but by flow.
