During the Warring States period (353 BCE), the state of Wei besieged Handan, the capital of Zhao. Zhao sought help from Qi. Generals Tian Ji and Sun Bin led an army to assist—but instead of marching directly to Zhao, they struck at the heart of Wei. The Wei army rushed back to defend their homeland, exhausted from the long march. Qi ambushed them mid-route, defeated them decisively, and lifted the siege. This tactic, known as “Besiege Wei to Rescue Zhao,” teaches a timeless lesson: when facing a direct challenge, find the indirect path. Do not waste energy on frontal clashes. Instead, identify the weak spot behind the strength. Redirect, outthink, and strike where it matters most. True wisdom lies not in brute force, but in knowing where to apply pressure. Sometimes, the best way forward is not through the obstacle, but around it.
